The Michigan Tech Archives is grateful to continue a strong\u00a0partnership with the Friends of the Michigan Tech Library to\u00a0sponsor the annual travel grant program. Two researchers, Dr.\u00a0Matthew Liesch and Wesley Thompson, were delighted to\u00a0have the opportunity to advance their research in the Copper\u00a0Country.<\/p>\n
Dr. Liesch concluded a multi-part research plan, which started\u00a0in 2017 and culminated in June 2018. In addition to countless\u00a0hours poring over photographs and historic documents\u00a0pertaining to his \u201crephotography\u201d project, Liesch shared his\u00a0expertise in a travel grant presentation that took place on June\u00a025, 2018. His talk, \u201cCircling Lake Superior: Rephotography to\u00a0Document Changing Landscapes of the Lake Superior Circle\u00a0Tour,\u201d guided the audience on a photographic journey to\u00a0explore changing landscapes from throughout the Copper\u00a0Country and the Lake Superior Circle Tour. The presentation\u00a0featured historic landscape photography from the Archives,\u00a0and supplemented those with other scenes along the route. For\u00a0comparative purposes, Liesch rephotographed ordinary\u00a0landscapes around Lake Superior during 2018.<\/p>\n
Wesley Thompson was another new grant recipient this year\u00a0and his research visit is slated for late October.
