With the generous support from the FMTL, the library hosted\u00a0Dr. Brett Gary, Associate Professor of Media, Culture, and\u00a0Communication at NYU, as speaker for Constitution Day.\u00a0Every year federally-funded schools provide programming to\u00a0honor Constitution and Citizenship Day and this year the\u00a0library took the opportunity on September 13th to collaborate\u00a0with the organizers of WW1CC to host both a talk as well as\u00a0to celebrate the opening of the WW1CC festivities.\u00a0\u00a0The WWI trench recreated on Michigan Tech’s campus invites\u00a0visitors to explore and immerse themselves in the history.<\/p>\n
Sue Collins, Associate Professor of Communication, Culture,\u00a0and Media here at Michigan Tech and lead organizer for\u00a0WW1CC, opened the evening with a few brief words\u00a0welcoming everyone to the opening of WW1CC and to the\u00a0library\u2019s Constitution Day event. Dr. Gary then delivered a\u00a0captivating talk to a full East Reading Room. His talk,\u00a0entitled, \u201cWorld War 1 Speech Catastrophes and the Postwar\u00a0Struggle for Free Political and Sexual Speech\u201d explored the\u00a0history of the wartime crackdown on political dissent and\u00a0sexual impurity, and the development of the parallel civil\u00a0liberties traditions that emerged in the war\u2019s aftermath.<\/p>\n
