The\u00a0\u201cWorld War I and the Copper Country\u201d (WW1CC for short)\u00a0project was conceived to help commemorate the end of WWI\u00a0and explore the impact the \u201cGreat War\u201d had on our area and\u00a0university.<\/p>\n<p>The program kicked off with a talk by Prof. Brett Gary (NYU)\u00a0in the library on the curtailment of civil liberties during WWI\u00a0in conjunction with Constitution Day (see the following article\u00a0in this newsletter), and then kicked into full swing with a\u00a0series of things: a full-scale reproduction section of a WWI\u00a0front line firing trench at the corner of US-41 and MacInnes\u00a0Drive that includes an audioscape of readings from soldier\u2019s\u00a0memoirs and poetry; a two-day symposium, \u201cArmistice &amp;\u00a0Aftermath\u201d, that featured two keynote speakers, Dr. James\u00a0Morrow, Jr. (UGA) on \u201cThe African-American Experience in\u00a0WWI\u201d and Dr. Lynn Dumenil (Occidental College) on\u00a0\u201cWomen and the Great War\u201d; a concert by the Superior\u00a0Symphony of the music of James Reese Europe, noted Harlem\u00a0bandleader and composer who served with the African-American 369th Infantry; and Charlie Chaplin\u2019s silent film,\u00a0<em>Shoulder Arms<\/em> (1918) accompanied by a live (digital) Wurlitzer organ accompaniment played by organist Jay Warren of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium itself featured a day-long program of two\u00a0dozen papers on WWI and its domestic impacts and features\u00a0with speakers from the Copper Country, across the country,\u00a0and as far away as Israel.
